A rare chance to hear Mahler’s Schubert interpretation
Why MahlerIn the 1890s, between symphonies, Gustav Mahler tried his hand ‘improving’ string quartets by Beethoven and Schubert, in adaptations for string orchestra. They don’t get heard much these days.
New World Symphony– April 20, 2019.
I’ve not seen this stagecraft before, where sections of the orchestra are highlighted and lowlighted as they rise and fall in prominence in the music.
Has this become a thing in orchestral presentations?
We (NJK Dresden) performed his arrangement of “Der Tod und das Mädchen“ about 15 years ago. The audience loved it.
Thank you for posting this performance. I had no idea that Mahler arranged the quartets for chamber string orch. Pretty interesting to hear the music in a “new”way.
Mahler did the same with Beethoven’s string quartet opus 95 (‘Serioso Quartet’).
