After last night’s Wigmore Hall recital, I had the chance to present Yunchan Lim with the first copy of the new Korean translation of my latest book, Why Beethoven.

Sleepless in Seoul? He won’t be any more.

Any book about Beethoven should be read with the greatest attention. He cannot be performed enough or read about enough. The three Viennese classics Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven have created the fundament of music life and set standards of excellence which are still as fruitful as ever and even more so, now that classical music has begun to struggle with the Western Zeitgeist of modern times.

Also listening to B’s music should be compulsive to any person longing to be a civilised one. And it can break through any barrier.

I once forced my PA to listen to the complete Missa Solemnis, as a punishment for the number of typos in her letters. And although it cost me a full bottle of smelling salts, her attention span and motoric capacities have since greatly improved, and her protestations diminished considerably. Even her intelligence has made a leap upwards, so – thinking of a certain type of commenters on SD – I would wholeheartedly recommend Norman’s book to them, it really seems to help.

Terrific book. The discussion of the Pastoral was especially striking to me.
