From WLRN.org:

A coalition of Florida grassroots organizations he3ld a protest on Saturday outside the Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts, calling out Florida Grand Opera Chair Tina Vidal-Duart.

They accused her of profiting from the detention of immigrants at Alligator Alcatraz. “Tonight’s action was a powerful reminder that art should illuminate truth—not hide injustice,” the protest organizers said.

If she’s an owner of one of the companies running that facility, naming and shaming is perfectly fair game.

    • tillson says:

Bill Gates owns the largest for profit prison system in the world called Serco.

      • Tiredofitall says:

Patently not true and misleading information.

First, Serco is a publicly traded UK company. The largest shareholders are Black Rock J.P. Morgan, Vanguard, etc. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation–not Bill Gates personally–may have included Serco in its investment portfolio at times, but claiming he is the owner is like me claiming to be the owner of Google and Microsoft as a result of my investments.

Furthermore, and more to the point, Serco does not operate prisons or immigration centers in the US. They operate principally in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

So, what exactly is your point?

  • Tiredofitall says:

The source of donations ought to be scrutinized. Bravo to the protesters.

Would that more people would protest Gelb’s egregious deal with the Saudi’s.

  • Gustav Speed says:

So they are protesting the removal of illegals. Got it.
Try going to any other country illegally and see what happens…..

    • Okram says:

They are protesting someone profiting from the government holding people in inhumane conditions.

Maybe some people ought to have been protesting IG Fahrben and Volkswagen back in the day. Yes, I am going there.

And in no other western country would someone experience something like Alligator Alcatraz. Maybe China with the Uighurs or the Russian GULAG, but is that really the standard by which we judge ourselves?

      • Carl says:

Well said. I suspect a lot of people aren’t aware that this gulag is still open (an appeals court judge overturned the ruling to close it). People are being caged in inhumane conditions, cut off from their families, while the facility breaks numerous environmental laws through its very existence. Florida Grand Opera ought do immediately distance itself from its board chair.

Try dealing with facts and reality, not imagined wishes.

  • Knowing Clam says:

So, Florida Grand Opera is fueled by blood money now. Not surprised. What a shame. That company used to be decently respectable.

  • Nathaniel Rosen says:

    Detention of “illegal” immigrants, right?

  • Joseph Weicher says:

    People aren’t “illegal”—they’re people.

    • Tiredofitall says:

If an “illegal” is truly a criminal, the US has a legal system with due process, regardless of one’s immigration status. Protecting everyone’s rights protects your rights. The power of the government should not be arbitrary.

    • John Palmer says:

What a foolish and naive comment. They are people who committed crimes, i.e. broke the law, I.e. behaved illegally.

      • Tiredofitall says:

Hardly naive and definitely not foolish, and most importantly, not ignorant of the law.

Please revisit the 5th and 14th amendments to the Constitution. It never hurts to refresh one’s memory.

    • Greta Scarbo says:

If you overstay your visa anywhere, you are “illegal.”

    • Guy says:

But what kind of people are they? Undocumented? But people aren’t documents either.

  • tillson says:

Um, they are shipping the illegals out together with their familes. Not sure why everyone thinks that it is ok to live in a country without abiding by the rules. I can not go live in any country on this planet without obtaining citizenship…not hard.

  • PT says:

It’s their right but not sure it will make any difference. It’s Florida, after all. Look what they did to their schools!
