  • René Henrique Götz Licht says:

    Unbelievable!

  • henry williams says:

Barenboim said i wish i could play like her.

  • Robert Battey says:

Such a unique artist, but not always in a good way. Other than the Chopin B minor Sonata played to an empty hall during COVID, this little encore constitutes the only solo playing she’s done in the last 20 years or so; and always the same one, after her concerto. You’d think she’d get tired of it by now!

    • Magnus says:

This is, of course, simply not true. In the last 20 years she has performed numerous solo pieces, many of them repeatedly. Bach Partita no. 2, Schumann Kinderszenen, Ravel Gaspard de la nuit, Jeux d’eau, various Chopin mazurkas, Barcarolle, scherzo 1 and 2, Tchaikovsky’s Seasons (complete), among others. A cursory glance at YouTube would find many of these performances.

  • Jobim75 says:

Bravo Martha, too bad she didn’t play as many sonatas as Horowitz… Scarlatti or the greatest of small things…. Martha we owe so much to your artistry but you owe us Schumann 1st sonata, symphonic etudes and Chopin études cycle..

  • fox says:

It is of course an amazing feat for anyone at any age, but at this level one has only oneself to compare to, and a decade ago she did it faster and better (obviously), which even she’d agree

    • David says:

I disagree. As she herself said in an interview, there’s always something to lose as we gain something. Yes, she doesn’t play fast in this clip but the changes in dynamics and nuances are more apparent. She probably also could still play fast. The Shostakovich Concertino that she performed in Paris this month is at a breakneck speed, but the one a few days before in Barcelona is much slower. It could be her artistic decision.

  • Mark says:

Who are you to tell anyone what to think?

Your commentary is so entitled, it’s beyond off-putting.

    • David says:

And why am I certain that it’s always people like you who get so easily offended who call others “snowflakes”. The commentary is hyperbolic, for the purposes of expressing enthusiasm. The real entitlement is your comment. Do you think every article and journalist should bend to your fragile ego and write accordingly? Grow up

  • Emetic says:

What would interest me is to know how her response at the keyboard is still so accurate and secure. I can’t think of anyone who has retained this level of technical competence at this age.
She is reported to have some arthritis and have had other health issues but she still performs with a supreme confidence.
I was speaking with an 80 year-old pianist last evening and they have arthritis, hearing and sight loss although in most other respects they are fine. Nevertheless, they consider their performance days to be over. I would be interested in what a medical report would tell us.
Can anyone cite any other examples besides Argerich?

  • John says:

Not shabby. But always the same. Can’t she play 1 or 2 of the other 500? Haskil or Grinberg could.
